Washington, DC

Did you know that May 6-12, 2001 is the U.S. Small Business Administration's (SBA) National Small Business Week?

Small business owners from all over the U.S. are headed to Washington, DC for this annual observance and three-day conference, May 7th through May 9th -- sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The 34th Annual Joint Industry/SBA Procurement Conference is being held at the Renaissance Washington, DC Hotel and will honor State Small Business Persons of the Year, and other award winners, from every state, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and Guam. The theme of this year's conference is "A History of Success, A Millennium of Opportunity".

On Tuesday May 8th, President Bush will announce the Small Business Person of the Year, and the Runners-Up, at a special White House ceremony. Since 1963, each President has issued a special proclamation celebrating Small Business Week.

The Small Business Administration's latest figures show

  • 25.5 million small businesses in the U.S.

  • Small businesses employ more than 50% of the U.S. private sector work force

  • Small businesses generate 75% of new jobs in the U.S.

So clearly small business is a really BIG deal in DC this week.
