Virtual IT News: ING Australia Moves up in the Ranks
ING Australia recently announced that it would be improving its virtual IT support and also appointing new senior positions to its customer systems business unit. This entity will bring together virtual IT, operations, e-business and customer service into one location.
This step marks the first in a two-year transformation program that will help it build a more stable and secure virtual IT department and e-business capacity. The new unit will be run by COO Fred Bertram, who will start his post on March 26. Previously, he was managing director of ANZ’s operations, technology and shared services divisions in India.
Virtual IT expert and CIO Greg Booker will lead the customer systems technology group and will be responsible for ING Australia’s IT delivery and transformation initiatives. Currently, Booker is the CIO at St. George Bank and has more than 20 years’ experience working with IT and in the virtual IT industry. He will begin on April 21.
Also appointed is Robert Liong, who will be the head of the e-business program. Formerly, he was head of strategy and business architecture as well as corporate channels at the company Westpac. His 16 years’ experience in strategy, transformation and various virtual IT-related business work will help him with this new challenge.

You need to find a niche if you want to be an IT specialist. How can you figure out this niche?
The Horizontal Niche
With a horizontal niche as an IT specialist, your ideal clients are not in the same industry (which is a vertical niche) but they have contacts in the same position. For example, you might discover most of your clients’ main contacts are office managers. The next step once you discover this is to take an informal survey and ask what their biggest IT problems are along with their biggest business problems and try to be a solution to these problems.
Asking these questions will help you retain these clients and also inform you of their biggest business and IT issues. You will then be able to create a great sales pitch as an IT specialist and find other clients just like the ones you have that are great. Look at magazines, mailing lists, organizations and conferences where you can find office managers.
An IT Specialist Should Know Things about Prospects
You need to know who your prospects are, what they read, which trade publications are out there and related to them (and which ezines), which newsletters they get, which local/regional conferences they might already be attending, which trade groups have local chapters they belong to, where they hang out, what they talk about and what they worry about.

When you run into prospects with IT emergencies, you can really bring things together for your business.
But how can IT emergencies help you?
First of all, the customer feels acutely what happens when he/she ignores IT issues. When a virus hits and a customer finds the anti-virus license renewal wasn’t handled and nothing was updated, the pain is immediately felt. During IT emergencies such as these, a customer’s main client may want on-line access to an account, but it’s not possible. This is your opportunity to swoop in and save the day.
The second way IT emergencies can present opportunities is that when you have saved the day, you will find yourself with access and also instant credibility. You are already there, and the customer wants to hear what you have to say.
When and How Do You Handle IT Emergencies?
When you respond to IT emergencies, you have to keep in mind that your customer will be looking for immediate assurance that the pain of the problem is about to end. This means you need to solve the problem with a clever workaround to get it immediately running or find a quick and direct solution. Your customers will want to know the meaning of “as soon as possible” to you, and it’s your chance to define it.
In reality, within an hour or two of your arrival in response to IT emergencies, your customers want you to explain the problem and prioritize the situation with them in regards to their business. They want to know you are resourceful enough to find solutions quickly and responsible for what happens.
What about Emergencies that Can’t Be Fixed Right Away?
Not all IT emergencies can be fixed right away. You have to think in terms of “triage.” You need to figure out what has to be done today and what can wait until a bit later. You also need to know the quickest way to getting results. Fixing the situation is not always about solving the biggest problem first. Sometimes you need to know some workarounds and how to prioritize issues affecting the entire company – the LAN being down – above those that are just affecting one person.
It Just Takes One Computer …
Sometimes just a single computer can cause IT emergencies. You may find that one computer is down and a clerk cannot submit the necessary online information to make payroll. This will become a top priority for you. Often you can arrange simple, temporary solutions to these types of IT emergencies, such as a direct dial-up connection that can get past the LAN and help you work on the problem and establish the beginning of a good relationship.

A lot of people involved in information technology consulting truly believe they can’t really get started until they’ve managed to get 20 certifications or more. They seem to think they won’t be considered legitimate in the world of information technology consulting unless they are highly decorated. This couldn’t be further than the truth for the following reasons:
1. Small businesses are typically not using the latest technology. Most businesses are not even going to know what your certifications mean let alone care if you have that many because they will be pretty behind – often about two years – when it comes to technology.

Virtual IT News: 3Com Drops from $66 Million Last Quarter
Computer business and virtual IT player 3Com Corp. announced last week it had dropped to $15.2 million from the previous figure of $15.2 million. The company announced it would sell shares in its TippingPoint network security subsidiary.
The loss reported was through June 30. Sales rose 22 percent to $310.9 million, in spite of the loss. Virtual IT industry company 3Com has not shown a profit since 2000, when it marketed the first Palm Pilot, which eventually spun off into its own business.
3Com president and CEO Edgar Masri stated that he was unable to offer any details about the first public offering of TippingPoint stock. However, before the announcement, the company had stated it would start selling shares by December 2007. Masri declared he believes selling TippingPoint stock will help the company improve its virtual IT offerings and focus on its finances and profitability.
In the last quarter, 3Com spent $91 million in order to buy 49 percent of its joint project, H3C from partner Huawei Technologies. The purchase price was $882 million, which makes 3Com the second-largest equipment maker in the virtual IT and computer business behind Cisco.
Despite losses, Masri assured the public that the company had reached profitability goals for the quarter and that H3C would help 3Com improve in the future and become a stronger force in the virtual IT market.

Virtual IT News: Longhorn Windows Server Set for Release Soon
Those in the virtual IT world have been long awaiting the release of the Longhorn Windows Server. The public release of the Beta 3 version last Wednesday brings the product closer to releasing.
Microsoft announced initially that it would ship Longhorn during the second half of 2007. The company announced to the virtual IT world today that Longhorn would not be released for manufacturing until the end of 2007.
For those involved in virtual IT and small businesses, the Windows Server beta is now complete with features, except it does not yet have the virtualization hypervisor – named “Viridian” – and will not have this feature until 2008. Viridian will be shipped separately from the rest of the Server package as an add-on.
For virtual IT specialists and businesses, Longhorn Beta 3 adds some important features to the pre-existing product. It offers the Windows PowerShell command language interface and also new server roles such as print services, Active Directory, Lightweight Directory Services and Active Directory Federation Services.
Longhorn will be important to the virtual IT world because it is the first product of its kind to provide such high levels of virtualization. Longhorn also has advanced security and protection that works with Windows Update and Microsoft Update. Some in the virtual IT world are anticipating issues with the firewall, but most are excited about the prospects of increased capabilities.
Microsoft is expecting hundreds of thousands of copies of Longhorn Beta 3 to be downloaded by those in the virtual IT world. The Small Business Server edition of Longhorn, named Cougar will ship in 2008.

Solution Provider Digitiliti Offers New Managed Storage Possibilities
Solution provider Digitiliti, a company offering remote enterprise data services will release unlimited data storage options for customers this week. The company was formed by a former storage solution provider and last week went public when it merged with the former company, Storage Elements and Cyclone Holdings.
Digitiliti will also be recruiting other solution providers in order to better serve its customers, according to Brad Wenzel, CEO of the Minneapolis-based solution provider. Wenzel previously ran solution provider company Wenzel Data, based I Stillwater, Minnesota. He states that the new Digitiliti will offer volume-level and file-level data recovery in its data center, located in the basement of the former Federal Reserve Bank building in Minneapolis.
Digilititi’s new service will work with all types of customer hardware and software and will store data ranging in size from multiple gigabytes to multiple petabytes. The solution provider uses compression and backups in order to decrease the space taken up, and is protected using encryption.
Solution provider Digitiliti also offers its solutions in a software application. Customers can use it to set up their own storage solutions and backup for both on-site and off-site capabilities.
Currently, Digitiliti works with 50 solution providers. It is searching for solution providers that have experience selling tape and WAN technology and expertise in storage.

IT Channel News: Judge Prevents Vonage from Getting New Customers
Last week IT channel, Alexandria, VA-based company Vonage Holdings Corp. was told by a judge that it would not be permitted to add new customers while in the midst of a lawsuit that found the company guilty of infringement of Verizon Communications patents. This infringement was based on systems used for phone calls made via the Internet.
IT channel company Vonage will appeal to U.S. District Judge Claude Hilton’s recent order allowing Vonage to only provide service to current customers. Hilton stated this decision could potentially put the company out of business if it cannot use the Verizon technology. However, Verizon could also suffer losses if the decision goes the other way and IT channel business can continue to use the patented technology.
Vonage’s lawyer, Roger Warin stated that the court ruling for the IT channel company would be a way to slowly kill it. Even just a partial limiting of the patent use will have the same effect as totally cutting off the company from using patented technology.
Hilton will sign the order officially on Thursday, at which point Vonage will be able to take the case to the U.S. Court of Appeals. On March 23, Hilton announced that he would be issuing an injunction that would completely prohibit use of all Verizon technology by IT channel company Vonage, which send the company’s shares down 26 percent in one day.

Solution Providers Discuss Introduction of Adobe Products to the Mac Market
Adobe Systems announced to solution providers and others that it was going to demonstrate new graphics and media products at Macworld. Still, solution providers say that the delay on the product launch is inhibiting sales of some related Apple products.
Adobe and a few other ISV’s are going to push Apple products at the San Francisco conference and get a head start on introducing important products for Intel-based machines that will appear on the market mid-way through the year.
Adobe announced on Thursday to solution providers that its next generation of Adobe Production Studio will be offered for Mac and Windows programs. The suite includes Adobe Premiere, Adobe Encore and Soundbooth and will debut at Macworld. In December Adobe also released a beta version of Photoshop CS3 for Mac and for Windows.
The software has not yet been optimized for Intel-based Macs, but solution providers state it will be critical to the evolution of Apple’s new machines. Many users have decided to stall upgrading hardware because of the delay of the product’s release, causing Apple’s hardware sales to waver slightly. Musicians and artists are particularly eagerly awaiting the release to update machines because of what the new software will do for their music editing and web-page design abilities. Customers are expected to be quick to update systems once the products from Adobe become available, according to both Apple spokespeople and top solution providers. The beta version alone helped improve the market for Apple products and probably contributed to the company’s overall sales increase last year.
According to solution providers, the new Adobe upgrade is a major improvement to the Mac offering of products and will help position Apple to be a competitor in the marketplace. Software that lets Macs run on more than one platform will also help the Apple channel. Solution providers have reported that 15 to 20 percent of those that buy sophisticated Mac machines opt to get software that allows them to run Windows.
